Interior designer vs. general contractor for a remodel: who should run your Allen or Plano project?

Interior designer vs. general contractor for a remodel in Allen or Plano, TX: what each one does, what Texas law and your city require of each, when a design-build firm makes sense, and when a general contractor alone is enough.

Interior designer vs. general contractor for a remodel comes down to one question: do you still have decisions to make? If your Allen or Plano remodel needs a layout and finishes you cannot yet picture, start with a designer. A design-build firm, where the designer and the crew work under one agreement, is one way to do that. If you already have finished drawings and every selection made, a general contractor can build it. A designer decides how the room will look and work. A general contractor runs the construction: the trades, the schedule, the permits and the inspections.

What does an interior designer do on a remodel?

An interior designer on a remodel plans the room before anything is built. That means the layout, the cabinet and fixture positions, the finishes and materials, the lighting plan, and drawings or renderings you approve before work starts. On a kitchen or bath, the designer also tracks lead times so the tile, vanity and cabinets arrive when the crew needs them.

A designer does not engineer your house. Texas Occupations Code section 1053.003 says that even state registration as an interior designer does not authorize engineering structural, electrical, plumbing or mechanical systems. Nor does it authorize practicing architecture. Moving a load-bearing wall or redesigning a gas line belongs to licensed trades and, where needed, an engineer or architect.

Texas also limits who may claim that state registration, under section 1053.151. If a designer’s credential matters to you, ask to see it and check it with the Texas Board of Architectural Examiners.

What does a general contractor do on a remodel?

A general contractor on a remodel runs the construction. The contractor hires and schedules the trades, orders materials, pulls permits, calls for inspections and answers for the finished work. A good general contractor builds exactly what is drawn. Most do not draw it for you.

Texas does not license general contractors at the state level. The list of regulated programs on the Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation’s home page does not include general contractors or home remodelers. Silberman Law Firm, a Texas real estate practice, wrote on April 29, 2025 that general contractors are not required to be licensed by the state.

The trades inside your walls are a different story:

  • Electrical. The Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation says anyone who performs electrical work in Texas must be licensed.
  • Plumbing. The Texas State Board of Plumbing Examiners licenses plumbers, and its home page tells homeowners to always hire a licensed plumber.
  • Your city. Allen requires all contractors to register with the City for $50 a year through its Citizen Self-Service portal. Plano’s registration rules are best confirmed with Plano Building Inspections before you sign.

Interior designer vs. general contractor: how do the roles compare?

An interior designer and a general contractor split a remodel between deciding and building, and a design-build firm puts both under one company. The table compares the three ways you can hire.

Once work starts, the last row decides who fixes a mistake. With two separate hires, a crooked tile line can turn into an argument about whether the drawing or the install was wrong.

What is a design-build remodeler?

A design-build remodeler is one company that designs your remodel and builds it under one agreement. The designer works alongside the crew from the first drawing to the final walkthrough. You approve one set of drawings, and the same company is responsible for making the finished room match them.

The trade-off is that nobody outside the company checks the crew, because the designer and the builder work for the same firm. Before you sign, find out whether the installers are employees or subcontractors, and who from the company inspects the work during the job and at the end.

When it works, you have one place to call. In a Google review, one Lively Luxury Designs customer called the firm “our designer and contractor” on their project. “Anytime there was an issue or something we didn’t like, they were quick to address and resolve it,” the same customer wrote.

Are there interior designers who provide project management and installation?

Yes. Interior designers who provide project management and installation work inside some design-build remodeling firms in Allen and Plano. They work alongside the firm’s own project managers and installers. In that model, you may pay for design time separately from construction, and the same team manages your ordering, scheduling and install.

Lively Luxury Designs, a design-build firm in this area, keeps an in-house interior designer on staff. Design time costs $100 per hour, ten hours minimum, and the designer stays with the remodeling crew from the first plan through installation.

Do you need a design-build remodeler in West Plano?

A design-build remodeler suits a West Plano home when the remodel changes the layout, not just the finishes. Plano’s median home was built in 1993, according to the U.S. Census Bureau’s American Community Survey 2024 five-year estimates. If your house is from that era, a kitchen or primary bath remodel is likely to move plumbing, take out a wall or rework lighting. That puts design and construction decisions on the same day.

That is where one agreement helps. The designer can see what is behind the wall before finalizing the plan, and the crew is building from a drawing it helped check. For what bath work costs in a 1990s Plano house, see what a bathroom remodel costs in Plano.

Hiring a design-build firm for a home modernization in Allen, Texas

A home modernization in Allen, Texas is often more about finishes than layout. Allen’s median home was built in 2003, per the same Census estimates, so your kitchen, baths and fireplace wall may work fine and simply look like their decade. In that case the design decisions carry most of the result: cabinet color and height, lighting, tile, a fireplace wall or built-ins.

Whoever you hire for the building side has to register with the City of Allen. You can ask any firm for its Allen registration before you sign.

When is a general contractor alone the better choice?

A general contractor alone is the better choice when the design is already done. If an architect or a designer you hired separately has given you finished drawings and a complete selection list, you need a builder, not a second opinion. The same goes for work with no design in it, like replacing a leaking shower pan with the same tile or swapping a water heater.

A designer is worth paying when choices are still open. If every choice is already made, skip the design fee and hire someone to install what you picked.

Does hiring a designer first save money on a remodel?

Hiring a designer first saves money on a remodel when you are not yet sure what you want. A change made on the drawing costs nothing. The same change after the vanity or cabinets are on order means a change order, a new delivery date and more money.

If you have a feeling for the room but no words for it yet, a few hours of design before any quote will tell you what the project actually is. For a kitchen, how custom kitchen design works from layout to cabinets walks through that order of decisions.

What to do next

Write down what you want the room to do and what you cannot stand about it now. If you can already name the layout and every finish, get bids from general contractors. If you cannot, book design time first. You can read how a design-led remodel runs and book a consultation, or see the remodeling services offered in Allen.
