What does a kitchen remodel cost in Plano, TX?
Plano kitchen prices come from three publishers. Each one measures something different. Cost vs Value models the full job cost of a defined project in Dallas. Angi averages the kitchen projects its pros report. Houzz asks homeowners what they spent and reports the median. When you compare them, keep each number next to its measure, and never average them together.

How much does a kitchen remodel cost in DFW compared with the national average?
A kitchen remodel in DFW costs 8.2% to 9.6% less than the national figure for the same project. That gap is calculated from the 2025 Cost vs Value Report’s Dallas and national job costs. Angi’s Dallas house renovation page, updated July 6, 2026, leans the other way: $15,000 to $41,800 in Dallas against $14,500 to $40,500 nationally. Both sources put your Dallas-area kitchen within about ten percent of the national price.
Size moves the national numbers too. The Houzz 2026 U.S. Kitchen Trends Study, published January 13, 2026 from a survey of 1,780 homeowners, put the median major remodel of a larger kitchen at $75,000. For a smaller kitchen, the median was $46,000.
Which kind of kitchen remodel are you planning?
A kitchen remodel in Plano is usually one of three jobs. You keep the cabinet boxes, you replace everything but keep the layout, or you change the layout. Published averages do not use those exact lines, so each figure here names its own source and what it counts.
- A refresh that keeps the boxes. Doors, counters, backsplash, hardware and lighting change while the cabinet boxes stay. Angi’s national kitchen page, updated September 4, 2026, puts its minor band at $10,000 to $20,000. That band also counts swapping in stock cabinets, so it runs a little wider than a true refresh. In Dallas, cabinet painting averages $923 and refacing averages $6,700, per Angi’s Dallas pages.
- A full replacement that keeps the layout. New cabinets, counters, appliances and flooring, with the sink, range and refrigerator staying roughly where they are. Angi’s national major band, $20,000 to $65,000, covers new appliances, high-end flooring and countertops, semi-custom cabinets and an island. The Houzz 2026 U.S. Kitchen Trends Study puts the national median major remodel at $55,000.
- A layout change. Moving the sink to an island, relocating the range or opening a wall. No published figure maps cleanly onto this job. Angi’s complete band, $65,000 to $130,000 or more, is the closest, but Angi does not define it as a layout change.
Moving the sink, the range or a wall raises your cost in any of the three, because each move adds plumbing, gas or structural work to the bill.
Should you reface, paint or replace your kitchen cabinets?
Painting your kitchen cabinets is the cheapest way to change how they look, at a Dallas average of $923, according to Angi’s Dallas cabinet painting page, updated August 4, 2026. Most Dallas homeowners paid $421 to $1,458, or about $30 to $60 per linear foot of cabinet.
Refacing costs more and changes more. Angi’s Dallas cabinet refacing page, updated March 6, 2026, puts the Dallas average at $6,700, with most jobs between $3,508 and $9,964. Refacing runs $125 to $375 per linear foot in Dallas. Angi says that is about 19% under the national average.
Replacing your cabinets costs the most, and no Dallas source prices it on its own. New cabinets show up inside whole-kitchen figures, like the $26,097 minor and $75,995 major midrange Cost vs Value jobs for Dallas. Cabinetry is normally the biggest single line in a full kitchen remodel.
How do you know which one fits? Open the sink base first. If the bottom of that cabinet is swollen from water, painting or refacing it buys you a nice-looking box that is still failing underneath. If your boxes are solid plywood or good particle board with no water damage, keep them. It is the biggest saving you have.
Can you keep your cabinets and just put in new countertops?
You can keep your kitchen cabinets and put in new countertops when the boxes are solid and level, and when the layout already works for you. The new counter is templated off your existing cabinets, so any box that is out of level or loose shows up in the fit. Quartz is the predictable price. Quartzite and marble are natural stone, so you choose the actual slab and pay for its veining. A waterfall end on an island adds a second slab and more fabrication time.
What can you keep in a kitchen remodel on a budget?
A kitchen remodel on a budget keeps the parts that still work and spends on the parts you touch every day. Here is what you can usually keep, and what keeping it saves you:
- The cabinet boxes. Paint or reface them if they are sound, and put the money into counters, hardware and lighting.
- The sink and range locations. Houses in Plano sit on concrete slabs, and many are post-tension. Moving a drain means cutting and repouring concrete, and the slab’s tendons must be located first.
- The floor. If your wood floor already runs through the kitchen, keeping it saves you from weaving new boards into the old and refinishing the whole run.
- Your appliances. Appliances are usually bought separately from the construction work. Keeping good ones lowers what you spend overall.
- The footprint. Cabinets, counters, appliances and flooring can all be new while the plumbing, gas and electrical shift only a few inches.
The one thing you may not want to keep in a Plano kitchen is a wall. Plano’s median home was built in 1993, according to the U.S. Census Bureau’s American Community Survey 2024 five-year estimates. Kitchens of that era were often drawn as separate rooms, with a peninsula that dead-ends and soffits over the upper cabinets. New doors in a closed 1990s kitchen still leave you cooking with your back to the family room.
If that wall holds up the house, taking it out needs a beam and posts. It usually needs an engineer’s drawing and a City of Plano permit too. That is the largest single swing in a Plano kitchen budget. Decide on the wall first, because every other choice in the room depends on it. Newer West Plano houses near Legacy West and Willow Bend are often already open, so your money there goes to finishes and storage instead.
Does a kitchen remodel in Plano need a permit?
A kitchen remodel in Plano needs a permit when it touches structure, plumbing or electrical, such as a wall removal or a moved sink. Plano’s performance dashboard sets a 5-day target for residential plan review and says that review covers kitchen and bath updates. That is the city’s goal, not a promised turnaround.
Plano’s Residential Addition / Alteration Permit Requirements & Checklist, revised December 6, 2019, asks for two copies of the construction documents with your application. A minimum of 65% of the building permit fee, plus the plumbing certificate fee and the plan review fee, is due up front. The permit holder must request every inspection. The checklist also tells you to contact your homeowners association for any added requirements from deed restrictions and covenants.
How long does a kitchen remodel take?
A kitchen remodel took homeowners an average of 8.3 months to plan and 4.5 months to build, in Houzz’s national survey of projects done in 2019, published July 21, 2020. Treat those as old, self-reported national numbers. The construction months include waiting between trades.
Cabinet lead time usually sets your calendar. A good rule for your project: do not start demolition until the cabinets have a delivery date, so your kitchen is not torn out waiting on a truck. Countertops are templated after the cabinets go in, and fabrication then takes about one to two weeks, so expect a quiet stretch in the middle.
Is a kitchen remodel worth it if you sell?
A minor midrange kitchen remodel in Dallas returns about 120% of its cost at resale. That is calculated from the 2025 Cost vs Value Report: $31,408 in estimated resale value against $26,097 in job cost. A major midrange kitchen returns about 52%, or $39,376 against $75,995. A major upscale kitchen returns about 34%, or $50,796 against $148,271. Those resale values are real estate agents’ estimates, not sale prices.
If you are selling within a year, a full kitchen rarely pays back on that timeline. Paint, hardware, lighting and counters do more for your listing photos per dollar.
